It didn't appear to be gaining all that rapidly on the B-17s in combat footage. Is this because of camera footage slowed down or could you control speed of craft to an extent? It seemed in the article as if speed control of the craft was of no option. It didn't seem as it gained on B-17s to be going more than 100 mph faster...
Wings had a great documentary on this. The fuel was incredibly dangerous to work with. Malfunctions could result in explosions. The flight time was very short. Rockets burn fuel incredibly fast. The bases had to be strategically located in the bombers path due to planes short range.
By all accounts an incredible ride and incredibly dangerous in all the wrong ways. Great fun to play in a flight sim (Il1946 for example) but you really would not want to fly it in real life.
The reason there wasn't more made, was because most pilots died trying to learn to fly it. It didn't have landing gear , and had a skid to land of.
There was a flight Sim out many years ago you could fly it. It was as big a danger to the Germans as it was to us.
